365 Films Challenge | #1 – Win Win (Thomas McCarthy, 2011) Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty, who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boy’s mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.
Rating: ★★★★★ What a great film to start the year with—cleverly written plot and main characters you can actually relate to (at least to those who inevitably find themselves in morally questionable situations borne out of good intentions). Win Win gives an accurate portrayal of the complex nature of human relationships; I enjoyed the evolving dynamic between Kyle, the young main star, and Jackie, the mother that takes him in. I urge you to watch this if you still haven’t, there are loads of touching moments and laugh out loud scenes (Paul Giamatti’s nervous breakdown gone wrong instantly comes to mind) sure to entertain anyone.
